Knights Come Up Short at St. John Fisher

Rochester, NY – Senior Jamie Bridge was saddled with a tough loss after an outstanding outing as the Clarkson University Softball team fell in a doubleheader to fifth-ranked St. John Fisher, 2-1 and 8-0, on Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record evened at 10-10 on the season, and the team is now off until next weekend when they are scheduled to host the University of Rochester and RIT at Scott Field. St. John Fisher improved to 12-2 on the season.

Bridge did virtually everything she could to will Clarkson to a win in the first game, but came up just short. In the top of the first, Bridge bashed a two-out solo home run to left-center to put Clarkson up 1-0. The Cardinals picked up their first hit in the bottom of the second inning, but neither team would put together much offense over the next few frames. In the top half of the sixth, the Knights went to work as Bridget Woolley led off with a walk. Summer Lancette followed with a bunt single and pinch-runner Samm Swiesz advanced to third on the play. Raeanna Dunn reached on a fielder's choice, but Swiesz was out on the play, leaving two runners on. Bridge then reached on an error to load the bases, but the Cardinals were able to wiggle out of the jam with a strike out and fly out to end the threat, and St. John Fisher took advantage. In the bottom of the sixth, Kate Mazierski delivered a two-out single to start what looked like a harmless rally. She advanced to second on a passed ball and then Ashley Prince drove her in with a single. In the seventh, the Cardinals took less time to gain the walk-off win as Sarah Kubik singled and moved to second when Karlie Neale was hit by a pitch. Genevieve Paeglow delivered another single to send Kubik home with the winning run.

Bridge allowed five hits over six innings, striking out five without issuing a walk. Bridge, Summer Lancette, Ali Schwenzfeier and Liz Caggiano each had a hit. Monica Moses improved to 5-0 on the season for the Cardinals, giving up four hits and a walk over seven innings while whiffing four.

Perhaps it was the shift in momentum or the fact that St. John Fisher's ace was up for game two, but Clarkson was unable to muster much in the way of offense for the nightcap. Lindsay Thayer mowed through Clarkson's lineup, striking out 10 against no walks in five innings. Only Raeanna Dunn was able to slap a single up the middle for Clarkson's only hit in the game. Meanwhile, the Cardinals scored five times in the third, twice in the fourth and once in the fifth to end the contest. Kristina Balsano hit a solo homer in the third and Sarah Kubik drove in three with a homer of her own in the same frame.
