Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | March 21, 2017

Two Days, Two Lopsided Wins in Florida for Golden Knights

Port Charlotte, FL – It took just 23 seconds for the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse to take the lead against Centre College on Tuesday, and the Golden Knights would hold the lead for the rest of the game as they cruised to a 17-4 victory against the Colonels at the annual Spring Fling.

The Golden Knights improved to 5-1 on the season with their second straight blowout win. Centre dropped to 8-3 on the year.

Katie Sergeant tallied that first goal for the Golden Knights at the 29:37 mark and then picked up the second of her four goals on the morning at 25:52. Though Centre would score just 34 seconds later, the Colonels had no chance of keeping pace with Clarkson's offense. Jaid Baytos found Kate Dillon three times in a span of just 123 seconds to push Clarkson's lead to 5-1 and after Centre scored a few minutes later, Clarkson ended the half with a 7-1 run in the final 17 minutes.

After Baytos scored in the opening minutes of the second half, the clock was running constantly as the Golden Knights added to their double-digit lead. Clarkson slowed down its offense in the final 20 minutes, scoring just three times in that stretch. However, the Knights' defense remained strong throughout. Clarkson forced 12 of Centre's 18 turnovers in the game and allowed the Colonels to clear the ball out of their defensive zone on only six of 12 opportunities.

Baytos matched her career-high of seven points, a standard she set just yesterday, with four goals and three assists. Kate Dillon continued her scoring streak with five more goals, and the senior has now recorded goals on 12 of the 15 shots she has taken in Florida. Sergeant added four goals to bolster the offense as well. Taylor Collins produced a solid all-around effort with a goal, an assist, three groundballs, three draws and two caused turnovers, while Abby Collins chipped in a goal, a caused turnover and three groundballs. Christina Pollard also had three groundballs to go along with Clarkson's final goal, and Emma Andrews score sparked the 7-1 run in the first half. Defensively, Amanda Ellman caused two turnovers and scooped up three groundballs. In the Clarkson crease, Samantha Gladd earned the win with six saves in the first 48:26 and Carrie Yurkon denied two shots over the final 11-plus minutes.

For Centre, Natalie Marek was busy in the Colonels' crease with 15 saves. Hannah Bellamah scored twice while Ellen Resinger and Haden Gibbons each had a goal. Resinger also snagged six draw controls. Clarkson outshot Centre 38-16, including a 32-12 edge between the pipes.
