Buzzer Beater by Brewers Spoils Hart's Career Day

Potsdam, NY – Senior Derek Hart set a pair of new standards, one personal and one a school mark, but his effort for the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team was outdone when Vassar scored on its fourth attempt in the paint as time expired for a 78-76 win over the Golden Knights Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

Clarkson, now 12-11 overall and 7-7 in the Liberty League, will likely need to win two and get help next week to get into the playoffs, though some of the tiebreakers are still up for grabs with so many games remaining. Vassar improved to 6-17 overall and 2-12 in the Liberty League.

The Brewers came out firing from beyond the arc, making five of their first six 3-point attempts in the first nine-plus minutes of the, pushing their advantage to 12 near the midway point of the half. Clarkson was just trying to keep pace, generally getting the ball inside to Derek Hart, who finished the half with 14 points on 6-for-8 shooting. Vassar led by as many as 14 in the opening 20 minutes, shooting 16-for-28 from the field and 7-for-13 from beyond the arc. The Brewers coupled their shooting with a 19-11 advantage on the glass, holding Clarkson to only two offensive rebounds in the first 20 minutes.

Vassar extended its lead to 16 in the first few minutes of the second half as Alex Seff became the team's go-to scorer, making plenty of mid-range jumpers. The Knights took their time chipping away at the deficit, getting to within eight at the 12:22 mark on a basket from Hart. That became the default choice on offense, as Vassar had no answer for the big man on the interior. Hart was either sent to the free throw line, where he shot 10-for-11 in the game, or used a variety of moves for baskets inside and calmly kept Clarkson in the game. The Brewers, on the other hand, went cold from beyond the arc and instead executed the backdoor cut to near perfection, responding to almost every Hart basket with a layup at the other end. Clarkson got within five on five different occasions in the last few minutes when they finally broke the string with a 3-pointer from Liam Ellis with 2:09 to go, pulling the Knights to a deficit of just four (74-70). Vassar got a basket on the ensuing possession, but then struggled on offense, missing a pair of free throws on consecutive one-and-one attempts and allowing Clarkson to cut the margin to two when Ellis made back-to-back layups. On Clarkson's final possession, Hart converted right out of a timeout and tied the game for the first time at 76-76. On the Brewers last possession, Jesse Browne missed on a wild first shot, but Vassar kept things alive with a series of tips and offensive rebounds, with Mason Dyslin getting his shot off with just one-tenth of a second left and converting for the Vassar win.

Hart finished with a career-high 36 points, shooting 13-for-17 from the floor, and 10 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the year. He also blocked three shots, setting a new school career mark in that category (126), surpassing Elson Pickering (2005-2010). Finally, Hart recorded his 500th point of the season on Saturday, becoming only the fifth player in Clarkson's 100-plus year history to do so. Drew Zlogar added 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks and Malaquias Canery produced nine points. Alex Seff had a team-high 28 for Vassar, shooting 13-for-20 from the field, and also led the squad with 10 rebounds. Jesse Browne scored 17 points and dished out six assists and Mason Dyslin came close to a double-double on eight points and 10 boards.
