Sorell Scores 20 in Knights 55-50 Win at SUNY Canton

Canton, NY – Scoring 19 points off turnovers, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team took advantage of mistakes by SUNY Canton to eke out a 55-50 non-league win on Tuesday evening at the Roos House.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-1 on the season and will enjoy their first home game of the season on Sunday when they take on Middlebury College at 2:00 pm. SUNY Canton fell to 1-2.

An inconsistent offense wouldn't allow Clarkson to win by double digits for the fifth straight year against SUNY Canton. The Kangaroos started the game with a modest lead as the Knights didn't score until the 5:37 mark in the first period when Devin Sorell tossed in a 3-pointer, but Clarkson rolled off six straight points to end the quarter and enjoyed a 15-10 edge at the first break. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Hannah Earl and Tricia Loso began the second, pushing the Knights advantage to 21-10, and Emma Buonanno stole the ball near midcourt and converted a fast break layup at 7:40 to give the Knights a 13-point lead (23-10). Molly Stewart made another shot for the Knights at 6:58, giving Clarkson a 25-12 edge as it appeared the Green and Gold would roll to another easy win over Canton. However, Clarkson went absolutely frigid in the final seven minutes of the half, going 0-for-9 from the field with five turnovers, allowing Canton to come all the way back and gain a one-point lead at the half, 26-25.

It took almost three more minutes in the third quarter before Clarkson would score, as a lay in by Molly Stewart at 7:01 ended a near-10 minute scoreless drought for the Knights. Although that basket hardly sparked the Knights, Clarkson put enough pressure on Canton to hold the Roos to just three points over the final five-plus minutes of the quarter. Both teams finally found a bit of a groove on offense in the fourth. The two teams were tied on three occasions, and Canton regained the lead ever so briefly (for 24 seconds) midway through quarter. Clarkson quickly pushed back ahead and then saw Raeanna Dunn hit a 3-pointer at the 3:45 mark for four points of breathing room (47-43) and Dunn added a layup a minute later to give Clarkson a six-point advantage at 2:47. The Roos wouldn't go away, though, trimming the margin to two in the final minute. However, that was as close as Canton would get as Clarkson made three free throws in the final 20 seconds while Canton's desperation shots wouldn't fall, allowing the Knights a five-point cushion and the win.

Devin Sorell scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Knights, while Molly Stewart came up just short of a double double on 11 points and eight rebounds. Hannah Early also chipped in a solid line of 6 points, 7 boards, 4 assists and 3 steals, and Madison Shea had 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 thefts. For SUNY Canton, Taylor Saltus scored a team-high 14 points, while Tatiana Laroche and Antanasia Chambers scored 10 and 8 points, respectively. All three players also recorded six rebounds.
