Knights Pick Up Second Straight League Win in 3-2 Victory Over Skidmore

Saratoga Springs, NY – With its biggest offensive outburst since the season-opener, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team picked up a key Liberty League victory with a 3-2 win over Skidmore College on Wednesday night.

The Golden Knights improved to 7-6-1 and 3-3-1 in the Liberty League, while Skidmore suffered its first loss in conference, dropping to 5-2-6 overall and 1-1-5 in league games. Clarkson will look to pick up its third straight win on Saturday when the Knights host Union College.

Four of the five goals in the contest came off headers with Clarkson striking first in the 11th minute. Kevin Calnan headed in his sixth goal of the season off a header pass from James Homan shortly after a corner kick was awarded to the Knights. Eighteen minutes later, Ben Poole headed in a long throw from Ben Caples to tie the game up, but a defensive misplay by the Thoroughbreds at the 34:38 mark put Clarkson up for good, as Stephen Klimek took advantage of the Skidmore miscue.

The Knights picked up an insurance goal early in the second half when Drew Lewis tallied his second goal of the season. Once again, it was off a header as Brandon Bahr sent in a long cross to find the junior Lewis in front at 55:36.

Though Skidmore would out shoot the Golden Knights in the second half 9-3, the Thoroughbreds couldn't get close until the final seconds. Augustine Okoye scored his conference-leading ninth goal of the season when he converted a header off a corner kick from Matt Schwab. By that point, however, there was only five seconds left in the game and not enough time for Skidmore to secure possession for another scoring opportunity.

Skidmore held a 17-7 advantage in shots, but the two teams were even on corner kick chances at three apiece. Riley McDonald made six saves to improve to 3-0 in the Clarkson goal, while Sebastian Bosch made two stops for Skidmore. The victory by the Knights over Skidmore is Clarkson's first since 2002.
