CU Men's Soccer Falls to Vassar 2-1

For the first time all season, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team allowed multiple goals in a single game as the Golden Knights fell to Vassar 2-1 on Friday afternoon on Hantz Turf Field.

Clarkson is now 4-3-2 overall on the season and 0-1-1 in the Liberty League while Vassar improves to 7-1-2 with a 1-0-1 conference mark.

It was Clarkson who struck first. Just 2:25 into the contest, the Green and Gold took the lead thanks to leading scorer Kevin Calnan. Eric Herberger passed to Calnan near the top of the Vassar box and Calnan rifled a shot with his left foot to the right side of the net, beating the Vassar goalkeeper to open the scoring.

Calnan's goal was all that separated the two teams at halftime. Vassar was able to erase the margin in the 62nd minute. Off a Vassar throw-in, Mattie Mrlik rose up and directed a headed effort towards the Clarkson goal. Although Michael King was there to stop the initial effort, the rebound fell to Jose Navas who was able to score to tie the game.

Vassar took the lead off another set piece. This time it was a free kick. The ball was played in and Tyler Gilmore was all alone on the back post where he was able to head home for the eventual game-winning goal.

Vassar finished with a 13-6 edge in shots and both teams took three corner kicks. King made three saves for Clarkson while Matt Marcelino had two stops for the Brewers.

Clarkson will look for its first conference win tomorrow when the Golden Knights host Bard in a 2:00 pm contest.
