Calnan's Two Goals Lead Men's Soccer to 2-0 Win

Two goals from junior Kevin Calnan drove the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team to a 2-0 win over Ithaca College on Friday afternoon on Hantz Turf Field.

It was the season opener for both teams as Clarkson starts the year with a 1-0 record while Ithaca is now 0-1.

Calnan's two goals came within ten minutes of each other in the first half. On the first, Brian Kroetz won the ball deep in the Ithaca end and played the ball to Calnan at the top of the box. He let loose a shot that slipped just inside the post, past the reach of Ithaca's goalkeeper.

Less than eight minutes later, Erick Naula's corner kick swung into the box and Calnan leapt up to meet it. His header was true and found the back of the net for his second goal of the game.

Clarkson had chances to extend its lead in the second half. Both Jon Jones and Stephen Kilmek got in behind the Ithaca defense, but could not finish the play as Jones' attempt was blocked by the goalkeeper while Kilmek dragged his shot just wide.

However, the missed opportunities did not cost the Golden Knights as Clarkson limited Ithaca's scoring chances. The Bombers finished with nine shots, but the only time Clarkson goalkeeper Michael King was challenge was off an Ithaca free kick, with King making a great diving stop to ward off the danger.
King finished with four saves while his Ithaca counterpart, Zach Jacobsen had two stops. Ithaca held a 9-7 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

Clarkson will play its second game in the North Country Classic when the Green and Gold hosts SUNY Brockport while Ithaca will go to Canton to take on St. Lawrence.
