CU Men's Soccer Preview - at Cortland 9/14

Three close games last week saw the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team earn a 1-1-1 record. The Golden Knights will continue the nonconference portion of their schedule when they travel to SUNY Cortland on Wednesday night for a 4:00 pm game.

Clarkson is 3-1-1 on the young season. After opening with two home wins, Clarkson had three straight one goal games. First, the Green and Gold dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 double overtime loss to visiting Plattsburgh. However, Clarkson bounced back when the Green and Gold scored the game-winning goal with less than three minutes remaining in regulation to beat Geneseo. It was Jon Jones who scored his first goal of the season to lift Clarkson to victory. The next day, Clarkson was back in overtime, this time against St. John Fisher. After Aidan Subra scored a second half goal to tie the game at 1-1, Clarkson and the Cardinals could not score another goal, leaving the game to finish in a tie.

Michael King has been the standout player so far for Clarkson. In five games and 481 minutes of action, King has allowed just two goals for a goals against average of 0.37. King has three shutouts this season which is the second highest total of his career. He currently leads the Liberty League in saves, goals against average, shutouts, and save percentage. King has been joined on the backline by James Homan, Zach Golden, Josh Eidem, and John Furcick who have not been subbed off yet, while Ryan Stinson and Andrew Akiki have both played significant minutes.

Cortland is 4-0-0 to start the season and have scored 11 goals while allowing just one. Cortland defeated Ithaca by the same 2-0 scoreline that Clarkson did and has also knocked off Liberty League member Skidmore 3-1. Nick Tata is the leading scorer for the Red Dragons, as he has already scored four goals. Cortland has six other players who have one goal so far. Clarkson has an all-time record of 4-12-0 against the Red Dragons. Last season saw Clarkson lose 4-2, which snapped a two game winning streak against the Red Dragons. Kevin Calnan scored a goal in the 2-1 Clarkson win in 2014.
