Top 10 Clarkson Highlights - #8 Clarkson Softball Wins 11 Straight in Florida, Records First 20-Win Season

The Top 10 Clarkson University Athletic Department Highlights of 2015-16 were carefully selected by the Clarkson Sports Information Staff. Top 10 Clarkson highlights will be posted on Mondays throughout the summer.

After dropping its first four games, getting run-ruled three times, and mustering just four runs against its opponents 34, anyone would have expected the Clarkson University Softball team to be a bit down on itself. Of course, the two teams that the Golden Knights faced (Salisbury and The College of New Jersey) were no pushovers as both teams reached the NCAA Tournament and combined for 67 wins, but regardless four losses are four losses.

The exact opposite occurred for the Golden Knights. Instead of hanging their heads in Florida a week later, Clarkson nearly ran the table down in Clermont, winning a team-record 11 straight games en route to the first 20-win season in the program's brief three-year history.

A little over two years ago, Clarkson was struggling to even score runs in Florida, starting with 19 scoreless innings and producing just 18 runs in 12 games in Fort Myers. In March 2016, the Golden Knights cleaned up their mistakes from the first weekend in Salisbury, MD. The Green and Gold came away with three one-run wins, two two-run wins, and two three-run wins as the team proved it could win close games.

Though the 12 game run in Florida ended with a loss to Westfield State, Clarkson came back north with momentum and produced its best finish in conference play, coming within a win of reaching the post-season. The season was also highlighted by a sweep of its North Country rivals, going 6-0 against Potsdam State (13-1, 11-4), SUNY Canton (14-5, 4-3), and conference foe St. Lawrence University (10-2, 9-6).

While Clarkson's roster was loaded with six all-stars overall, it was sophomore Summer Lancette who took the most significant step forward, as she also was named a NFCA All-Region selection along with pitcher/outfielder Jamie Bridge. Lancette, a second-year outfielder for the Knights, ranked fourth in the Liberty League in each of the slash stats, hitting .432 with a .495 on-base percentage and .611 slugging percentage. Her three home runs, 28 runs batted in, and each of the slash stats were the top figures in program history, while her 24 stolen bases also set a mark and led the Liberty League. Even more importantly, she dropped her strikeout percentage from 21.4% to 10.1%.

Lancette's season was a reflection of the Golden Knights in 2016, indicative of the significant step forward in becoming a prominent program in the region.
