Top 10 Clarkson Highlights - #9 Felix Abongo Chosen Clarkson Male Athlete of the Year

The Top 10 Clarkson University Athletic Department Highlights of 2015-16 were carefully selected by the Clarkson Sports Information Staff. Top 10 Clarkson highlights will be posted on Mondays throughout the summer.

Few sports afford the opportunity to celebrate career accomplishments mid-game like basketball does, especially on senior day. With 4:44 remaining in the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team's 25th and final game of the 2015-16 season, senior standout Felix Abongo received a standing ovation from the entire crowd, a quick embrace from the opposing coach, and universal love from his teammates and the coaching staff on the bench.

Though the season didn't end the way anyone in Potsdam had hoped, especially following the most successful four-year run in the program's history, Abongo was able to nevertheless end his collegiate career as a winner.

As one of the best all-around players in the Liberty League, Abongo was rewarded as the Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year and received a Liberty League First-Team All-Star nod from the conference's coaches. It was the fourth time that Abongo received acclamation from the league, as he was chosen to the Liberty League All-Rookie team in 2012-13 and gained Liberty League Second-Team All-Star status as both a sophomore and junior. All of those honors coupled with his standout performance as a senior made Abongo the choice as the Clarkson Male Athlete of the Year during the end-of-the-year awards ceremony.

In 103 career games, in which he started 101 times, deferring his role twice on senior days when he was a freshman and sophomore, Abongo netted 1304 points (eighth all-time), grabbed 678 rebounds (seventh all-time) and dished out 280 assists (eighth all-time), making him the only player in program history to rank in the top 10 in each of those three key categories. Additionally, he finished his career ninth all-time in blocked shots (53) and made more free throws (301) than any other player in the past 45 seasons at Clarkson.

Beyond the numbers, Abongo also was appreciated by everyone on the athletic staff and throughout the university. Without knowledge of the results, Clarkson University President Tony Collins singled him out at the Athletic Awards Ceremony, praising his growth as a student-athlete, proving that nice guys can in fact finish first.
