Clarkson Softball Drops Opening Doubleheader in Maryland

Salisbury, MD - Facing top notch competition in early March, the Clarkson University Softball team dropped a pair of non-league contests in southern Maryland, dropping an 8-0 decision to Salisbury University in the opener and then falling in extra innings 9-3 against The College of New Jersey on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights are scheduled to take on both teams once again on Sunday before heading to Florida late next week.

The 11th-ranked Sea Gulls and Clarkson were scoreless through the first two frames, but Salisbury broke through with three runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Kim Dorsey. The senior shortstop also had the big blow in the next inning, delivering a two-run single that helped break the game open for the Gulls. Down by eight through four frames, the Knights looked to extend the game beyond the fifth, but Clarkson went quietly with a groundout, pop up and another groundout to end the game. Jamie Bridge took the loss for Clarkson, going four innings and allowing nine hits and a pair of walks. Annah Brittingham picked up the win for Salisbury, allowing just two runners to reach base on a hit by pitch in the first and a single by Liz Caggiano in the second.

In the second game of the day, Clarkson and The College of New Jersey were scoreless through three innings before the Lions broke through with a run in the top of the fourth. Madison Levine struck for a two-out double to center to plate the first run and then came through with another two-out double in the sixth to put New Jersey up by three runs. Clarkson picked up its first runs of the day in the bottom half of the sixth as Bridge began the rally with a one-out single. Chelsea Elliott followed with a walk and Liz Caggiano sent Bridge scampering home to make the score 3-1. Erika Jensen drove in another run with a groundball to the right side of the infield and Bridget Woolley doubled home another run to knot the game up at 3-3. After a scoreless seventh, the Lions broke things open with a six-run eighth. New Jersey picked up one run to take the lead, but it was a Sam Platt two-run double and a three-run homer by Jess McGuire that truly put the game out of reach. With a runner on second in the bottom half of the eighth, Clarkson was immediately taken out of the rally with a double play and then a line out by Caggiano ended the contest.

In game two, Raeanna Dunn, fresh off an appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the Clarkson Women's Basketball team on Friday evening, went 2-for-4 with a stolen base. For the Lions, Steph Vuono was 2-for-5 and Levine went 2-for-3. Clarkson's Katie Pelton went three innings as the team's starting pitcher, and allowed just two hits and an earned run while whiffing three hitters. Meg Tully went the last five frames for Clarkson, striking out three but taking the loss.
