CU Softball Scores Six in the Sixth to Sweep Doubleheader

Clermont, FL – Twice on Tuesday the Clarkson University Softball team found itself trailing in the sixth inning, but each time the Golden Knights rallied in the bottom half of the inning to prolong their winning streak to eight games in Florida.

The Golden Knights defeated Rutgers-Newark 3-2 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and then scored four times in the bottom half of the sixth against Bethel University to come away with a 7-6 victory.

In the opener, Rutgers-Newark scored an unearned run in the top of the first, but the Knights tied the score in the bottom of the third. Raeanna Dunn reached on an error, stole second and then moved up to third on a ground out before Jamie Bridge singled Dunn home. In the top of the sixth, Rutgers-Newark regained the lead when Kelly Yusko doubled, moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt and completed the circuit on a sacrifice fly. The Scarlet Raiders' lead would be short-lived, however, as Erika Jensen delivered a two-run single in the bottom half of the frame. Jamie Bridge retired Rugters-Newark in the seventh to earn her third win of the season.

The second game was an entirely different circumstance for Clarkson as the Knights were behind for the majority of the game before coming from behind to claim the win. Bethel's Abbie Bircher started things off with a solo homer in the top of the third inning and Micayala Moore connected for a two-run homer in the fourth to make the score 3-0. Clarkson tied the game in the bottom half of the fourth as Ali Schwenzfeier singled home the Knights' first run and Katie Pelton added a two-run single to knot the game up 3-3. Caroline Kivisto added to Bethel's bludgeoning with another two-run homer in the top of the fifth and the team added another run in the sixth to make the score 6-3. Clarkson chipped away in the bottom half of the sixth, scoring a pair of runs and putting runners on second and third. The Royals attempted to back pick Sara Armstrong at second base and Raeanna Dunn took off for the plate, but ended up getting caught in a run down. However, the two runners ended up causing enough confusion that Dunn was able to take the plate and Armstrong ended up at third on the oddly-formed double-steal. Jamie Bridge then doubled home Armstrong to give Clarkson a 7-6 lead. For the second time in the day, Bridge completed a scoreless seventh to gain the win. Bridge finished the second game with a 4-for-4 effort at the plate and struck out three of the six batters she faced in 1.2 innings of work in the circle.
