13th-Ranked Golden Knights Sweep for Second Time in Four Days

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Bristol, RI - Senior Victoria Kirkemo delivered nine aces in six sets for the Clarkson University Volleyball team on Friday afternoon, becoming the school's all-time leader in that category, as the Golden Knights enjoyed two sweeps against Wheaton College and Lasell College at the Roger Williams Invitational.

The Golden Knights, ranked 13th in the country in the first poll of the season according to the AVCA, improved to 4-0 and have now won 11 straight sets. Clarkson will take on Berry College (GA) and Roger Williams on Saturday.

"We took the court with much more resolve today than on Tuesday against Cortland," Clarkson head coach Johan Dulfer said. "I thought we learned some important lessons about discipline that hopefully will come in handy tomorrow against two very good opponents. I thought every time our opponents made a good push in a rally and swung hard (today), we stepped up our game immediately in response. If we bring that mindset into the rest of the tournament, and the rest of the season, good things will happen."

In the first match of the day, the Golden Knights took on Wheaton College (MA) and won in three straight sets (25-13, 25-15, 25-17). Clarkson came out strong by hitting over .400 in the first set on 15 kills and just a pair of errors in 32 swings and the Green and Gold never looked back. Aishvina Arasu led the team with 11 kills and just a pair of errors in 22 attempts (.409 hitting percentage) and Kirkemo hit .429 with eight kills and a pair of errors on 14 swings, adding in four aces. Sophomore Rachael Aird matched Kirkemo with four aces as well, while Kirstie Shurie produced 27 assists and Tara Stilwell led the squad with nine digs.

The second match was quicker than the first as the Knights downed Lasell College in three straight (25-8, 25-16, 25-14). Kirkemo's first ace of the match pushed her past former Clarkson standout Stephanie Thornton on the team's all-time aces list (279, 2002-2005), and the senior outside hitter, who is the active career leader in Division III in aces, also produced 10 kills with just a single miscue on 22 swings. Arasu led the team in kills for the fourth straight match with 11, hitting .529 with just a pair of errors on 17 swings. Shurie consistently pushed the offense with 28 assists as the team hit .342 overall in the match (.320 first set, .360 second set, .345 third set). Stilwell finished in double figures for digs with 11.
