Knights Finish Off Weekend with Another Split at Juniata Invitational

Huntingdon, PA - Challenged by top opponents for a second straight day, the Clarkson University Volleyball team was able to come away with a second split on the weekend at the Juniata Invitational, defeating Stevens Institute of Technology in four sets before falling to fifth-ranked and unbeaten Juaniata in four sets on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights, currently ranked 16th in the country, moved to 7-3 on the season with the split, and all three losses have come to teams ranked in the AVCA Top 25.

In the opener at noon, Clarkson dropped the first set but rallied to take three straight to defeat Stevens (21-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-17) in a rematch of last year's NCAA New York Regional Championship. The Ducks came out strong in the first set, hitting .303, but the Golden Knights shut Stevens' offense down to only 21 kills and a .032 hitting percentage in the final three sets. Clarkson, conversely, picked up steam as the match went on, averaging 16.7 kills per set in the three wins. Senior Aishvina Arasu had another big match with 19 kills and just four errors while Victoria Kirkemo struck for 11 kills to go along with 19 digs. Danielle Farabee was dominant in the middle, hitting .563 with 10 kills and just a single error in 16 swings. Clarkson's defense was most impressive, recording 92 digs in the four-set match, led by freshman Tara Stilwell (26 digs) and junior Sierra Rhoades (21 digs). Senior setter Kirstie Shurie had 47 assists in the match as well as eight digs.

The second match battled the two top-ranked teams in the tournament, and the Eagles were able to come away with a four-set win (25-20, 21-25, 25-20, 25-20). In the first set, the two teams were tied at 12-12 before Juniata was able to rattle off nine of the next 11 points for a comfortable lead. Clarkson rallied back from an early deficit in the second set to tie things up at 1-1, and in the final two sets the Golden Knights were in a position late to take the games but came up short. Down by nine (18-9) in the third set, Clarkson rallied back to within two points (19-17) before Juniata scored five of the next six points to open the set back up, and in the fourth set, Clarkson was down by just one (20-19), but once again the Eagles scored five of the final six points to take the match. Arasu and Kirkemo produced 14 and 13 kills, respectively, with Shurie recording 42 assists and 10 digs. Stilwell led the team with 26 digs in the match, the third time over the weekend that she surpassed 25 digs.

"I am so proud of our effort today," head coach Johan Dulfer remarked. "We battled back after a sluggish start against a very good Stevens team and pushed Juniata into a deep corner. Playing great competition will pay us huge dividends down the stretch. We had to learn to play every point and take none for granted, and we made big strides in that area. Playing four nationally-ranked or nationally-recognized teams and walking away with two wins is just half the story of this weekend. Learning that we had more than our fair share of chances against everyone should have told this team that we don't have to fear anyone any more. That's a great feeling in the development of our program."
