Knights Come Up Short in Season-Opener at Utica

Utica, NY - Holding a one-goal lead late in the game, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team could not keep pace offensively with the host, as Utica College defeated the Golden Knights in their season-opener 12-10 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights will look to get on the winning track this weekend when they travel to face Morrisville State on Saturday afternoon, while the Pioneers picked up their first win in two games this season.

The majority of the game would be a back-and-forth affair, as neither team held more than two-goal advantage until their was less than two minutes left in the contest. Clarkson scored less than two minutes into the game on an Ashley Flick goal and then gained another on a Taylor Collins shot, but Utica responded with three goals midway through the half to take a 4-2 lead. Clarkson dominated the scoreboard for the final 15 minutes of the first half, scoring four straight with goals from Danielle Faivus, Stephanie Lynch, Abby Doyle and and Paige Fayette.

At the start of the second half, Utica quickly tied the game up in just 85 seconds, but the Knights wouldn't trail during the second half until the final moments. Paige Fayette's second goal of the game at 8:29 gave Clarkson a 9-8 lead, but Utica held the Knights in check down the stretch as Megan Kane and Rebecca Plunkett scored goals to give the Pioneers their first lead in almost 30 minutes, 10-9. Two goals just 28 seconds apart for the Pioneers put the Knights down by three with only 1:19 to go, and Clarkson was able to only get one of those scores back when Ashley Flick connected on a pass from Paige Fayette with 11 seconds left.

Fayette scored five points on two goals and three assists and also added four groundballs for the Knights, while Christine Wright scored three points with two goals and an assist. Flick added two goals, while Collins, Doyle and Lynch each scored once. Collins also added three groundballs, while Emma Jeffery caused three turnovers and picked up two groundballs. For Utica, Megan Kane starred with six points on five goals and an assist while adding in nine groundballs, six draw controls, and six caused turnovers. Plunkett also had three goals to go along with six draws and five groundballs.

Dani Tani made 11 saves on 23 shots in the Clarkson net, while Kells Casey made seven saves on 17 shots. Utica held advantages in shots (30-23), groundballs (27-20), draw controls (14-10), and caused turnovers (15-10).
