Clarkson Gives Second-Ranked Emory a Run in Three-Set Loss

Atlanta, GA - Senior outside hitter Aishvina Arasu delivered 16 kills, including eight in the third set, but the 17th-ranked Clarkson University Volleyball team dropped a three-set match against second-ranked Emory University (25-16, 25-18, 30-28) on Saturday afternoon at the Emory Invitational.

The Golden Knights fell to 25-8 on the season after a 1-2 weekend, while Emory improved to 30-2 on the year. Clarkson will host the Liberty League Championships next weekend for the right to represent the conference in the NCAA Tournament.

In the first two sets Clarkson was in a position to take away victories, but each time the Eagles found another gear at key times to claim the wins. Clarkson was within a point (10-9) and trailed by just three in the late teens (17-14), but Emory scored six straight to push forward for a 25-16 win. In the second set, Clarkson led 11-10 and the two teams were tied just a few points later (13-13), but Emory scored 10 of the next 12 points and then edged ahead for a 25-18 victory. The third set was more competitive, though Clarkson trailed by five early (10-5). The Golden Knights were able to pull within one (12-11) and finally rallied all the way back to tie the set at 21-21. Clarkson scored two more for a lead and was in a position to take the third set (24-23), but Emory came back to tie it and force extra points. Down the stretch the Knights had four set points and Emory had three, but it was the Eagles that were able to close the set and the match, winning 30-28.

"Today was a much better day than yesterday," Clarkson head coach Johan Dulfer said. "Emory is a very good and well coached team but we made them very uncomfortable and actually had more kills, digs, and aces than they did. That says a lot. The third set is as good as we have played all year and going into playoffs that is exactly what we needed to see. I'm very proud of our resilience and look forward to having another shot at some great teams in the weeks to come."

Arasu had one of her best matches of the year with 16 kills and just a single error in 26 swings (.577 hitting percentage), while Victoria Kirkemo (11 kills) and Lauren Hutchinson (7 kills) also helped on offense. Kirstie Shurie had another impressive match with 38 assists and 12 digs. Tara Stilwell contributed 11 digs and two aces, a figure that was matched by both Kirkemo and Hutchinson. For Emory, Kathryn Trinka had 13 kills and just two errors in 25 swings and Shannon Nugent had seven kills with no errors in 11 attempts. Sydney Miles produced 32 assists and Jessica Holler had five kills and four aces. Becky Breuer and Sarah Maher each had a team-high 10 digs.
