Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Oct. 31, 2015

Clarkson Blanked by St. Lawrence

Despite a heroic effort from freshman goalkeeper Riley McDonald, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team fell to visiting St. Lawrence 3-0 on Saturday afternoon on Hantz Turf Field.

Clarkson finishes its season with a 5-10-2 overall record and a 1-6-1 conference mark while St. Lawrence is 12-3-2 overall and 6-2-0 in the Liberty League.

On Senior Day for the Golden Knights, it was the freshman goalkeeper who played like an experience veteran. McDonald had three saves in the first 20 minutes of play, including a diving shot that saw him tip Jethro Dede's shot off the post and out of danger.

It was Dede though, who got the Saints on the board. Dan Hunt sent a cross into the Clarkson box from the right wing and it fell to Dede on the left side. Dede was able to hit a low shot that found the back of the net for a 1-0 St. Lawrence lead.

Early in the second half, McDonald made two more great saves to keep Clarkson within a goal. First, he made a kick save at point blank range to keep St. Lawrence from scoring. Later, off a St. Lawrence corner kick, Harry Copeland was able to leap and direct a header towards the goal, but McDonald was again there to deny the Saints.

The Saints second goal came off a Clarkson error. Miscommunication amongst the Clarkson backline saw a Clarkson pass end up in the back of its own net for an own goal. St. Lawrence added a third less than three minutes from full time when Brendan McNamee curled his shot into the bottom right corner.

St. Lawrence held an 18-5 advantage in shots and took five corner kicks. McDonald finished seven saves while his St. Lawrence counterpart, Ryan Roethel, had three stops.
