Knights Split in Atlanta on First Day of Emory Invitational

Atlanta, GA – After a solid performance in the first match of the day, the Clarkson University Volleyball team struggled in its second effort of the day and came away with a split against Washington & Lee and Randolph-Macon Friday night at the Emory Invitational.

Clarkson, ranked 17th in the latest AVCA Coaches' Poll, recorded a three-set win against Washington & Lee (25-21, 25-18, 25-20) but dropped a three-set decision to Randolph-Macon (25-12, 25-16, 25-23) in the nightcap. The Golden Knights will take on second-ranked Emory on Saturday afternoon before returning to New York.

In the first match of the day, the Golden Knights started off a little slow against Washington & Lee, falling behind by five points (13-8) by the midway point of the set. However, a stretch where Clarkson scored six of seven points gave the Knights their first lead of the set (19-18) and the team never looked back. The second set was never much in doubt for Clarkson as it led throughout. Clarkson saw a five-point lead (15-10) evaporate to just one (15-14) and it appeared as if the Generals had a chance to even the match at one set apiece, but the Knights scored five straight more points with kills from Victoria Kirkemo, Lauren Hutchinson and Rachael Aird, ending with a seven-point cushion. In the final set, Clarkson raced out to an 8-1 lead but that was just the first of several big runs that made for a seesawing game. Up 12-4, Clarkson gave up eight straight points to see the game tied 12-12, and the run didn't end there as the Generals took a 16-13 lead. However, Victoria Kirkemo recorded a kill to tie the game at 17-17 and the Knights continued with six more points to gain an advantage that Washington & Lee could not overcome.

Kirkemo, in her first match back after missing three weeks with an injury, hit .409 with 11 kills against two errors in 22 attempts. Hutchinson delivered nine kills, Aishvina Arasu had eight kills and a .368 hitting percentage, and Aird was incredibly efficient with a .600 hitting percentage with a line of 7-1-10. Kirstie Shurie helped Clarkson recover from a rough start on offense and led the team with 35 assists to go along with eight digs, while Tara Stilwell led the team defensively with 16 digs. For the Generals, Anna Lausberg had eight kills, Mackenzie Shand went 5-0-14, and Elena West had 19 assists and six digs.

In Friday's second match, Clarkson started off well with modest leads in each of the three sets, but the Golden Knights struggled mightily on offense, hitting just .063 in the match in a three-set loss to Randolph-Macon (25-12, 25-16, 25-23). Up 4-2 in the first set, Clarkson lost 10 of the next 11 points and saw its small edge dissipate and change into a double-digit deficit rather quickly. Clarkson had six hitting errors and three service errors in the first set, and those totals were actually worse in the second set (10 hitting errors and three service errors), but the Knights were able to make the score closer (25-16). The last set it appeared as if the Knights had righted the ship, but a 12-9 lead advantage was switched to the Yellowjackets' favor with a quick four-point run. Though the match was essentially back and forth the rest of the way, Clarkson was unable to continue the match with a 25-23 loss in the final set.

"Today was disappointing," Clarkson head coach Johan Dulfer said after the second match. "I thought Randolph-Macon was extremely clean and good in all aspects of the game, but we never matched their intensity and purpose to make it a match. It's time for us to find our inner warrior and lay it all on the line for each other. When we do that we are a much better team than what we showed today."

Aishvina Arasu scored seven kills, but had seven errors against Randolph-Macon, while Kirkemo (6-1-22) and Aird (5-1-13) had slightly better success from a percentage standpoint but fewer kills. Kirstie Shurie had a double-double with 25 assists and 12 digs to go along with three service aces. Tara Stilwell also produced 11 digs for the Knights. For the Yellowjackets, Courtney Lowers had 17 kills and Katie Rossberg scored 11 kills. Erin Quinn produced 21 assists and three aces while Samantha Sallade had a team-best 12 digs.
