CU Men's Soccer Preview - at RPI/Union 10/3-4

Men's Soccer will travel to RPI and Union looking for their first conference win.

A tough loss to open their Liberty League schedule means the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team will still be looking for their first conference win when they travel to RPI for a 4:00 pm game on Friday and then to Union for a 2:00 pm game on Saturday.

RPI has started their season off strong, currently holding a 6-1-2 record and a ranking of 18th in the country and second in the East Region. They were also the first Liberty League team to get a conference win when they beat Skidmore 1-0 on September 16th. Since then however, they have lost their first game to Oneonta State and played Williams College to a 1-1 tie. They will also not have played a game in the previous 10 days when they meet Clarkson on Friday. The two teams have a long standing history with each other, having played 50 times, with RPI collecting 25 wins, Clarkson 21 wins, and four meetings ending in a draw. However, RPI has recently dominated the series, having only lost once to the Golden Knights in the last 12 years.

Union comes into the weekend with 5-3-1 record. Since a rough four game stretch where they picked up a tie and all three losses of their losses, Union has been seemingly unstoppable, winning three in a row, including an 8-0 demolition of Bard College in their first Liberty League game. They have been strong both on offense and defense, with their 24 goals scored tied for first in the conference their seven goals allowed good enough for second on the conference leaderboard. The series between Union and Clarkson is knotted at 15 wins apiece with one tie thrown in, but Union has won ten straight, including a 1-0 win at Clarkson in 2013.

Clarkson was unable to make a first half goal stand up on Saturday, as RIT scored two second half goals to escape Hantz Turf Field with a 2-1 win. Alex Vozzella (Boston, M.A.) scored his first goal of the season against the Tigers, in just the third minute of play, off an assist from Trevor Blackwell (Pittsford, N.Y.). Michael King (Verona, N.J.) made two saves in net for the Green and Gold. Clarkson's record now stands at 5-5-1.
