Senior Katie VanDeValk (Baldwinsville, NY) began her final collegiate campaign with an impressive effort, scoring five goals and seven points as the Clarkson University Women’s Lacrosse team won its 2013 season-opener with a 15-9 victory at Potsdam State.

The Golden Knights, guided by first-year co-head coaches Christy Foster and Ben Gaebel, never trailed on the Bear’s home field, jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead and a 10-4 advantage through the opening 30 minutes. Clarkson and Potsdam traded five goals apiece in the second half.

Senior Alyssa Cristaldi (North Syracuse, NY) and freshman Christine Wright (Watertown, NY) also played key roles in the victory with four goals and two assists each. Senior Noelle Miller (Hamburg, NY) and junior Marissa Mastronardi (Cortland, NY) rounded out the Clarkson goal scorers with one tally apiece.

Both teams produced 24 shots, but junior Kara DiNatale (Auburn, NH) was solid in the Clarkson net with seven saves through 58 minutes. Freshman Stephanie Lynch (Baldwinsville, NY) played the final two minutes for the Knights and recorded one stop.

Cristaldi and senior Morgan McGowan (Stony Point, NY) were strong on groundballs for the Green and Gold, picking up four and three loose balls, respectively.

Margaret Wall and Bailey Weigel led Potsdam (0-1) in scoring with three goals each.

Clarkson hosts Utica College on Friday, March 15 at Hantz Turf Field for its next action.
