Senior Saryn Campbell (West Bolton, VT) and junior Katie VanDeValk (Baldwinsville, NY) both recorded five points as the Clarkson University Women’s Lacrosse team earned a 10-8 overtime victory at Utica College on Saturday afternoon.
Campbell, who tallied a game-high three assists, forced the overtime with her second goal of the contest with just 26 seconds remaining in regulation to make the score 8-8. VanDeValk, who scored a team-high four goals, netted an insurance goal in extra play to help the Golden Knights gain their second win of the season.
Junior Alyssa Cristaldi (North Syracuse, NY) connected on a free position shot midway through overtime for the game-winner.
Utica (2-2) grabbed an early 2-0 lead to start the game, but Clarkson answered back with four straight tallies, and five of the next seven goals, to take a 5-4 lead after 30 minutes. Freshman Cassie Grace (Potsdam, NY) was strong in the first half, scoring two of her three goals during the period.
The Pioneers outscored the Knights 4-3 in the second half to make it 8-8 through 60 minutes, but could not hold of the Green and Gold in six minutes of overtime play.
Clarkson outshot Utica 29-17 and held a 31-30 edge in ground balls.
Senior Hannah Walters (Amherst, NH) made six saves to record the victory. VanDeValk and freshman Mollie Simmons (Clinton, CT) both picked up a team-high four ground balls.
At 2-2, Clarkson returns home after a three-game road trip, hosting Oswego State on Wednesday in a 4:00 p.m. game at Hantz Turf Field.
