Utica Sends Knights to First Loss of Season

Utica, NY – A pair of yellow cards in the final six minutes of the contest led to two man-up goals as the Clarkson University Women’s Lacrosse team’s winning streak was snapped at four as Utica College gained a propitious 8-7 victory against the Golden Knights Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights, who fell to 4-1 on the season, will look to get back to their winning ways when they host Oswego State on Tuesday afternoon. Utica evened its record at 2-2.

Clarkson appeared prepared to blow out another opponent as the team jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 23 seconds into the game when Alyssa Dausman (Syracuse, NY) scored an unassisted goal. However, the Knights would hold a narrow 4-3 edge at the half as Utica’s Tammy Kohanski single-handedly kept the Pioneers in the game with three goals, including two free-position shots, with one coming with only 20 seconds remaining in the half.

The Pioneers tied the score up 4-4 early in the second half, but Robyn Baumgartner (Bethel, CT) helped the Knights reclaim its one-goal advantage just 14 seconds later. Freshman Katie VanDeValk (Baldwinsville, NY) put Clarkson up 6-5 at the 15:17 mark as the Knights continued to hold a small advantage. Kohanski scored her fifth goal of the game at 13:53 to tie the score up at 6-6.

With less than six minutes to go, Dausman and freshman Alyssa Cristaldi (North Syracuse, NY) were whistled for yellow cards just 19 seconds apart, giving the Pioneers a favorable opportunity to score while the Knights were playing down. Utica took advantage as Julianne Schultheiss scored with 4:20 remaining in the game, giving her team the lead for the first time. Katlyn Banker tallied another man-up score with less than three minutes to go, providing a key insurance goal. Dausman, released from her yellow card penalty, brought Clarkson back to within a goal, but the Knights were unable to record the equalizer as time expired.

Dausman and VanDeValk each scored two goals, and Dausman added a team-best four groundballs. Cristaldi and Kim Loucks (Waterloo, NY) each scored a goal and an assist, while Baumgartner added a score as well. Hannah Walters (Amherst, NH) made 12 saves for the Knights.

Kohanski scored five goals and scooped up five groundballs for the Pioneers. Shelby Barbay made 10 saves for Utica.
