Auburndale, FL – A pair of losses to Transylvania University closed out the Clarkson University Baseball team’s spring trip on a sour note, as the Golden Knights fell 10-6 and 8-3 Tuesday at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex.
The Golden Knights fell to 1-6 in the early going and now get the next 10 days off before starting the conference schedule at Rensselaer the final weekend of March.
Game one saw Jerry Coleman (Potsdam, NY) get the start, and the sophomore had some misfortune in the opening inning as the Pioneers scored two unearned runs in the top of the first. Unfortunately for the Knights, Transylvania was far from finished offensively scoring in each of the first six innings for a sizeable advantage. Clarkson finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when Steve Magovney (Watertown, NY) led off the inning with a single and was pushed to third by a Matt Curry (Richland, NY) hit. David Kinney (Mexico, NY) drove home Magovney, and Brett Peplowski (Albany, NY) doubled in Curry and Kinney. Peplowski came around to score when Pete Clarke (Tully, NY) forced in a run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Clarkson scored runs in the sixth and seventh inning on a Peplowski RBI-triple and a Matt Curry fielder’s choice, but the Knights’ offense couldn’t overcome the Pioneers offense, which took advantage of nine free bases (eight walks and hit by pitch) by stealing eight times on the Clarkson defense.
In game two, Transylvania scored one in the first, but Clarkson quickly responded with a run in the top of the second when Dan Padrazo (Setaucket, NY) plated Kinney with a sacrifice fly. The Pioneers scored five in the bottom of the second inning on just two hits, and Transylvania added two more in the sixth inning for an 8-1 lead. Clarkson had a small rally in the top of the seventh inning as Magovney hit a sacrifice fly to plate a run and Curry followed with an RBI-single.
Peplowski finished the day with four hits in five at bats, while Kinney, Magovney, and Curry each added three hits in the doubleheader.
