Despite recording two shorthanded goals and putting in a strong effort against 8th-ranked Cornell University, the Clarkson University Hockey team fell to the Big Red 5-3 before 4,267 fans at Lynah Rink in Ithaca, NY on Saturday night.

Coming off to a difficult 6-1 loss at Colgate on Friday, the Golden Knights came out with a jump to their step against Cornell and scored the opening goal in a contest for the first time in 10 games. Freshman Adam Pawlick (Utica, NY) connected for his seventh goal of the year, unassisted at 12:26 to give the Green and Gold the early lead.

Cornell (12-5-3, 9-2-2), however, answered back with four straight goals to hold a 4-1 lead midway through the second period. Locke Jillson put the Big Red in front with an even-strength goal at 16:07 and a power-play marker 1:00 into the second frame. At 4:32, Chris Moulson scored followed by Blake Gallagher’s power-play tally at 8:08.
Senior Tim Marks (Brownville, NY) and sophomore Corey Tamblyn (Bobcaygeon, ONT) sandwiched shorthanded scores around a power-play goal from Cornell’s John Esposito. Marks snapped a stretch of 21 games without a goal with his second career shorthanded tally and third goal of the season at 10:13 of the second. Just 37 seconds later Esposito connected for the Big Red’s third power-play goal of the night. Tamblyn, who did not score as a rookie last year, netted his fourth goal of the season with a shorthanded effort 1:53 into the third.

Cornell out shot Clarkson 42-21. Sophomore Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT) made 37 saves.
The Knights were 0-of-4 on the power play. Cornell went 3-of-7
Clarkson, which has lost six straight, falls to 5-18-3 overall and to 1-11-2 in ECAC Hockey. The Knights close out a four-game road trip next weekend in NY’s Capital District playing at Union on Friday and at Rensselaer on Saturday.
