Potsdam, NY – Over the course of the past three seasons, goals have come at a premium in the match up between the University of Rochester and the Clarkson University Men’s Soccer team, so much that the two teams played to their second consecutive 0-0 scoreless tie Sunday afternoon at Clarkson Field.
The Golden Knights ended a two-game losing skid with the tie, moving to 3-2-1 overall, while the Yellowjackets, ranked 19th in the country, saw their winning streak come to an end with their first blemish of the season (4-0-1).
Though the Yellowjackets controlled the play for a good portion of the first half, they were only able to get eight shots off, most of which weren’t real threats on the goal. Clarkson’s three chances were the same, as two were wide and the attempt on goal was a sailing shot from 30 yards away on a direct kick.
The second half proved to be more of the same as the two teams matched shot totals at 5-5. Once again, neither team had any true quality chances, though Rochester held an overwhelming edge in corner kicks, but most of those opportunities were harmlessly cleared out of the box before a shot could emerge.
The last time either team scored in the series was in 2007 when Rochester won, 1-0. Since that goal, the Yellowjackets have not scored against Clarkson in 306 minutes, 20 seconds. The Knights’ last goal dates back to 2006, a span of 310:04 when Justin Crowley scored on a penalty kick in the waning seconds.
Rochester led in shots (14-11) and corner kicks (14-2). Michael Peacock made five saves for his second shutout of the season for the Yellowjackets and Clarkson freshman Scott Stuart (Ottawa, ONT) stopped six shots for his first career shutout.
