Potsdam, NY – An early run to start the game, and another push in the second half helped the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball team to its biggest victory over Plattsburgh State since the 1993-94 season, a 79-50 victory on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Golden Knights improved to 1-3 on the season while Plattsburgh fell to the same mark. Clarkson will travel to Oswego State on Tuesday.
Thanks to some easy lay ups and open 3-point shooters, the Golden Knights jumped out to a 14-1 lead before Plattsburgh was able to make its first field goal at the 14:56 mark of the first half. However, the Cardinals began to assert themselves on the inside with several lay ups by Taylor Amarando, cutting the lead to just five points at 23-18 with just under 10 minutes to go in the half. Five points was as close as the Cardinals would get, though, as Clarkson received a pair of 3-pointers from junior guard Katie Goldberg (Stowe, VT) to take its largest lead of the ballgame with just over three minutes to go in the period, 38-21.
At the end of the period, the Knights led by 16, thanks to 13 points from Katie Goldberg. Senior forward Michelle Reddinger (Baldwinsville, NY) added in nine points, while both Carey Turner (Clifton Park, NY) and Lauren Pluchino (Liverpool, NY) were valuable on the boards with 8 and 7 rebounds, respectively. Plattsburgh’s Taylor Amarando led all scorers with 17 points, shooting 9-for-12 from the free throw line.
In the second half, the two teams traded baskets and free throws as Clarkson maintained a 20-point advantage. Once the Knights returned to pounding the ball inside to Reddinger, their lead expanded to over 30 as the Cardinals had no answer to the senior forward in the paint.
Reddinger finished the game with 19 points and eight rebounds, shooting 9-for-12 from the floor. Goldberg added 16 points, making four 3-point field goals in the contest and shooting 6-for-11 overall. For the Cardinals, Taylor Amarando finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds, accounting for nearly half of Plattsburgh’s points.
