Potsdam, NY - Three scores in the first 20-plus minutes of the second half by St. Lawrence ended any hope of the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team finishing the regular season on a high note as the Saints took a 6-2 decision from the Golden Knights Saturday afternoon at the Hantz Turf Field.
The Golden Knights closed out the season with a record of 5-8-3 overall and 0-5-2 in the Liberty League, while St. Lawrence moved to 8-6-1 overall and 2-5-0 in conference play.
To call the playing conditions on Saturday less than picturesque would be a considerable understatement as the game was played in rain and wind that varied from passasble to stupifying. The Saints started the game with the wind at their back, and the team took advantage by sending long passes into the Clarkson defensive end. None of them would pay off initially, as St. Lawrence's first goal came off a corner. Alex Laird scored his fourth goal of the season for the Saints off a double-deflection in front at 14:31. St. Lawrence would pick up another 17 minutes later by Sam DeMello, making the score 2-0.
Clarkson ended its scoring drought just five minutes later when senior Brody Boomer (Louisville, KY) scored his second goal of the season, finishing off a cross from Nate Hazen (Dalton, MA). The celebration would be shortlived, however, as St. Lawrence would score 32 seconds later.
The Knights pulled to within a goal with just over two minutes remaining. Hazen took a direct kick from near the sideline and found the head of Mark Secko (Shoreham, NY) for his sixth goal of the season.
With a narrow 3-2 lead starting the second half, St. Lawrence continued to play its game of long passes and strong runs as Reid Carr gave the Saints the first of three insurance goals at 47:31. Joey Mattina scored his second goal of the game 12 minutes later, and Brandan Gorman added his league-leading 12th goal of the season in the 67th minute when he tapped in a rebound.
St. Lawrence finished the game with a 24-14 edge in shots and the two teams tied with four corner kicks each. Nate Goss-Woliner made four saves for St. Lawrence, while Adam Lamoureux (Falmouth, ME) and Scott Stuart (Ottawa, ONT) each made four saves for Clarkson.
