April 11, 2008

Geneva, NY - Seven players scored two goals or more as the 13th-ranked William Smith Herons defeated the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team 21-5 in Liberty League action Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 1-7 overall and 1-3 in conference, still holding out hope for a shot at the Liberty League post-season. William Smith, meanwhile, stayed perfect at 9-0 and 3-0. Clarkson hosts Oswego State on Sunday afternoon.

In less than perfect conditions, the two teams started in blustery and cold weather, but the wind did little to slow down the Herons' offense as they compiled 12 goals in the first half and nine more in the second, controlling play throughout.

Nina Sperry and Rachel Stahl each recorded three goals and two assists for William Smith while Brittany Callaghan added in three goals and one helper. For Clarkson, Alyssa Breed (Macedon, NY) led the Knights with a goal and two assists and Emily Bojarski (Syracuse, NY) also scored twice. Alicia Chace (Cortland, NY) and Rachel Kopels (Queensbury, NY) each contributed a single score as well.

Clarkson's Meagan Emlaw (Norfolk, NY) made 18 stops, facing 39 shots on goal out of 46 total for the Herons. Becky Josefiak saved eight for William Smith. The Herons finished with advantages in shots (46-20), groundballs (20-11), and draw controls (20-8).
