Potsdam, NY – Senior guard Alicia Chace's (Cortland, NY) tenacity helped her produce the best game of her collegiate career with 9 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 steals to help lead the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball team to a 54-43 win over Plattsburgh State Tuesday night at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Golden Knights improved to 2-4 and return to action on Thursday against Oswego State. Plattsburgh State fell to 2-3.
The two teams both struggled mightily from the field in the opening minutes as they combined to make just one shot in the first seven minutes. Struggling from the field and the free-throw line, Clarkson finally made a field goal after an 0-for-16 start with a long 3-pointer from Katie Goldberg (Stowe, VT) to cut the lead to 9-6. Including the 3-pointer from Goldberg, over the course of the next six minutes, the Knights went on a 14-4 run to pick up a four-point lead. Though that advantage would expand to five points with less than a minute remaining, a 3-pointer from Detina Santiago cut the lead to 22-20 going into the intermission.
Using some sharp 3-point field goal shooting, the Golden Knights were unable to maintain their lead throughout the second half, though several close calls brought the lead back to within a single possession. Goldberg and Sierra Noles (Averill Park, NY) combined to make three 3-point field goals, and the Knights buried free throws down the stretch to push their victory to double figures.
Goldberg finished with 12 points on four 3-pointers and Michelle Reddinger (Baldwinsville, NY) added in 12 points and 9 rebounds. Junior Rachel Whitermore (Holliston, MA) contributed 8 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 steals.
Detina Santiago led the Cardinals with 14 points before fouling out and Casey Clark contributed 15 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end.
