Knights Fall to Sixth-Ranked Dutchmen, 1-0

October 6, 2007

Schenectady, NY - Chris Poey scored in the 63rd minute to give 6th-ranked Union a 1-0 victory over the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team in Liberty League action at College Park Field Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dropped to 3-6-2 overall and 0-3-1 in the Liberty League, a tough blow to their playoff chances. Union moved to 9-2 and 3-1 in conference play. Clarkson faces rival St. Lawrence next weekend in Canton.

Apparently national-rankings mean very little to the Golden Knights, who upset then 15th-ranked Geneseo earlier in the season, as Clarkson more than held its own against the sixth-ranked Dutchmen. The Green and Gold were out shot by Union just 10-7 and held an overwhelming advantage in corner kick opportunities, 6-2.

Unfortunately for Clarkson the game's turning point came when Union's Matt Wentworth
started the Dutchmen's scoring play by stripping the ball from a defender down the right line and maneuvering up the field. His sliding pass found classmate Dane Mellon in the box, whose cross was headed in by Poey for his fifth goal of the season.

Union's Rob Kramer made two saves in each half, mostly on long shots by the Golden Knights, for his sixth shutout of the season. Clarkson's Johnathon Rushing (Paw Paw, MI) stopped three Union shots.
