Knights Squeeze Out Victory at Plattsburgh

December 5, 2006

Plattsburgh, NY - With three free throws in the final 19 seconds from Vanessa Westcott (Parish, NY), the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team squeaked past Plattsburgh State 46-44 Tuesday night at Memorial Hall.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-6 overall with their second straight win while the Cardinals dropped to 1-5. Clarkson finishes the first half of the 2006-07 season on Thursday when they host St. John Fisher College.

Clarkson played stingy defense in the first half as Plattsburgh missed 26 shots in the opening 20 minutes while making just five, but the Knights couldn't produce an overwhelming lead as they shot only 7-for-23. The Cardinals came back early in the second half and then held the lead by a slim margin for a 14-minute span before Clarkson came back to take the lead with a lay up from Rachel Whitermore (Holliston, MA). After Plattsburgh retook the lead, Wescott was fouled and made two free throws to push Clarkson up by a point. With another missed shot by the Cardinals, Westcott made the first of two free throws to give Clarkson a 46-44 advantage. After a defensive rebound and a heave from the Cardinals, Clarkson came out with its second win.

Westcott closed with nine points to lead Clarkson while senior Mickala Henson (Waverly, NY) added in nine points and nine rebounds. Whitermore and Amanda Coots (Bath, NY) also contributed eight points each for the Knights.
