Late Goal Lifts Bears Over Clarkson

October 25, 2006

Potsdam, NY - Less than two minutes remained in regulation when Potsdam State's John McCloskey sent a kick from 25 yards out into the back of the net as the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 decision to the Bears Wednesday afternoon at Clarkson Field.

The Golden Knights dropped to 2-12-1 overall on the season and close out the year when they host Plattsburgh State on Saturday. The Bears ended their season at 4-12-1.

Early in the game, the Bears sent four shots on goal and controlled play, but the Knights countered quickly and held play for much of the first half. The second half was a repeat of the first as the Bears took three shots on the Clarkson goal in the first four minutes, but following that rush, the Knights continually pushed the ball up. Strikers Cale Samuel (Mississauga, ONT), Andrew Cahill (Rome, NY), and Seni Makinde (Hyde Park, MA) took numerous runs at the Potsdam goal with mixed results, but came up empty in the goal-scoring department.

The match appeared headed to overtime before McCloskey took a pass from Gary Lee about 10 yards out of the penalty area and lofted a shot past goalkeeper Greg Dunton's (Fairport, NY) outstretched hands to the near post with only 1:37 remaining in the game.

The Bears out shot Clarkson 16-12 in the game and two teams were knotted 4-4 in corner kicks. Dunton recorded 10 saves, five in each half, for the Golden Knights, while Tyler Lattimore made seven saves for the Bears.
