Canton, NY - A six-goal surge in the final 45 minutes turned a close game into a lopsided win for St. Lawrence as the Saints defeated the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team 7-0 in a Liberty League contest Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights dropped to 1-10-1 overall and 0-5-0 in conference while St. Lawrence kept its playoff hopes alive by moving to 2-2-1 in the Liberty League and 6-4-2 overall. Clarkson closes out the conference slate next weekend when the team visits Rensselaer and Vassar.
Though the Saints controlled play in the first half with a 15-3 advantage in shots, only one of those attempts made it past Clarkson goalkeeper David Hennessey (Wading River, NY). Brendan Tougher chipped in a centered pass from Axel Galeano at 18:59 to put the Saints up 1-0.
The second half wasn't as kind to the Knights as the Saints scored six goals in 10 shots, many that Hennessey had no chance at defending. Galeano scored two goals in a five minute span with Pal LaMarca tallying a score between the Galeano scores to put the Saints up 4-0. Charlie Bogosian, Brendan Shaw and Emmanuel Mbong each added goals in the final 25 minutes for the final tally.
The Saints out shot Clarkson 25-7 in the game and held a massive 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. Hennessey made seven saves, most of which came in the first half, for Clarkson while Emilio Coletta stopped four shots in the Saints' shutout.
