KNIGHTS FALL 1-0 to UNION in FOUL-LADEN GAME

October 9, 2004

Potsdam, NY - Despite playing a man down for the final 37 minutes, Union was able to squeak out a 1-0 Liberty League victory over the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team Saturday afternoon at Clarkson Field.

The Golden Knights dropped to 3-10 overall and 1-4 in the conference while Union improved to 6-6 and 2-2, ending a four-game losing streak.

The Dutchmen scored the game's only goal at the 23:06 mark of the first half when freshman striker Chris Poey scored his fourth goal of the season, dribbling the ball past the goalie and sending it to the left-hand post.

Four cards were doled out at the 41:52 mark after a minor skirmish and when Jeff Sullivan picked up a second yellow early in the second half, giving him a red card and an ejection, the Dutchmen were forced to play down a player for the remainder of the game. Although the Knights possessed an advantage for the remainder of the game, they were unable to convert any of their scoring opportunities to send the game to overtime.

Union and the Golden Knights were even in shots at eight apiece, but Union owned a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. David Hennessey (Wading River, NY) made five saves while Matt Mayerhofer stopped four shots for the Union shutout.
