CLARKSON MEN'S BASKETBALL 2002-03 SEASON WRAP UP
There were many question marks surrounding the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team when the season opened in November and expectations were not as high as in 2001-02. However, the Golden Knights, guided by fourth-year coach Tobin Anderson and assistant Jason Leone, proved that losing the top five scorers from the year before was no reason to panic. Clarkson compiled an 11-14 overall record and 6-8 mark in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA), vying for a post-season berth on the final day of the regular season, falling just one win short of the UCAA Tournament.

The Golden Knights began the season with a 3-0 record, beating Old Westbury and Potsdam in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Maxcy Hall, and then defeating Plattsburgh the following week. A difficult stretch of opponents dropped the Knights to 4-4 at the winter recess and a similarly tough streak of away games had the Knights at 5-8 before a return home brought Clarkson back into the UCAA playoff hunt. Despite some struggles against more experienced foes in conference, the Golden Knights were vying for a UCAA post-season tournament spot on the final day of the regular season, but fell at Union to end the campaign.

Anderson and Leone were able to redefine the Golden Knights with their varied personnel this season, turning the run-and-gun Knights' of 2001-02 into the defensive stalwarts of the UCAA in 2002-03. Although Clarkson scored 11 points less per game than last year, their defensive effort remained high, holding opponents to a conference-low 65.3 points per game.

Without departed seniors Steve Vega and Ashton Fritz, who averaged a combined 34.5 points per game, junior Josh Harner (Houston, TX) stepped up as a scoring threat for the Golden Knights, averaging over 16 points per contest after scoring just 6.1 points per game in his sophomore season. Harner was greeted with several accolades late in the season, as he was named the UCAA Guard of the Week the final two weeks of the campaign. He posted a career-high 32 points in a 66-65 league win over Hobart and scored 30 points against Skidmore. Harner finished fifth in the UCAA in scoring and was second in the league in 3-point field goals made, finishing with 60 3-pointers in 25 games. His season performance garnered him a spot on the UCAA All-Star Second-Team.

Aiding Harner in the starting backcourt was junior Kevin Williams (Syracuse, NY) and sophomore point guard Matt Decker (Whitney Point, NY). Williams was among the top shooting guards in the UCAA, making 52 percent of his attempts from the floor, and averaged 9.5 points per contest. His 6.8 rebounds per contest were among the leaders in the UCAA and led the Golden Knights. Decker averaged nine points per game and placed second in free-throw percentage (82.1%) and fourth in assists per game (4.0) in the UCAA. Decker's 12-for-12 performance from the free throw line against Union was the second-most free throws made without a miss in the conference this season. Also providing valuable minutes in the backcourt were sophomore PJ Susice (Massena, NY), who averaged three points per game despite playing less than nine minutes per contest, and juniors Dan Broderick (Westport, NY) and Eric Wallace (Ilion, NY). Broderick competed in 21 games, starting three times, while Wallace competed in 10 contests. Though he sat out the season to maintain eligibility, freshman Chet Truskowski (Hammond, NY) will be counted on for his outside scoring touch next season.

In the frontcourt, captain Steve Godlewski (Rotterdam, NY), the lone Clarkson senior, finished out his Clarkson career by starting 21 of the team's 25 games. Godlewski enjoyed several breakout games in mid-season, scoring 19 points on 9-for-11 shooting against Medaille and following that performance up with an 8-for-10, 17-point performance against Oneonta State. Godlewski averaged 7.7 ppg and grabbed over three rebounds per contest. Freshman Russ Vitallo (Dracut, MA) came on in the latter portion of the season and made a late-run at UCAA Rookie of the Year. Vitallo averaged 6.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, and a block per game, but dwarfed those numbers over his last six contests when he averaged 13.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Vitallo's five blocks in a 59-56 win over St. Lawrence was the top effort in the UCAA this season. Making solid contributions in their sophomore seasons were Kamal Crues (Rochester, NY) and John Adamchick (Clifton Park, NY). Crues started eight games and had 19 blocks, while Adamchick averaged 5.4 points and 3.5 rebounds per game, starting 14 times.
