2001 SEASON ReCAP
Expectations were high for the Clarkson University Baseball team this spring after a 25-10 record in the 2000 campaign. Though the Golden Knights did not repeat the impressive .714 winning percentage of a year ago, first-year coach Jim Kane was quite pleased with the results of the 2001 season and sees a rapid rise to prominence for Clarkson's baseball team in the coming seasons. "Expectations were definitely high, but I think what we accomplished this year may be a little bit more impressive than what they did last year," stated Kane. "Just in regards that we were able to back it up again. We didn't sneak up on anybody this year and we knew we weren't going to. We saw a lot of quality pitching and we upgraded the schedule a little bit from last year."

The Golden Knights played one of the most difficult schedules in the history of the school and battled to an impressive 4-3 record against top schools in Florida before returning north for the remainder of the schedule. The Knights finished with a 22-13 overall mark and a 6-6 record in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA), the second highest single-season win total in Clarkson history. The Green and Gold closed out the campaign by winning their second consecutive ECAC Upstate New York Tournament Championship with convincing victories over Oswego State (11-0) and the University of Rochester (12-5) at SUNY Brockport on May 13.

Despite the decrease in wins this season, Clarkson was actually a superior team overall compared to last year's squad. The Golden Knights team earned run average (4.19) and fielding percentage (.951) were better than the previous season's as Clarkson led the UCAA in both categories by a wide margin.

"All in all the guys did a great job," said Kane. "Brooks McMurry did a great job and received a number of postseason accolades and deservingly so. I think our whole pitching staff did an excellent job. They gave us a chance to win just about every game. Defensively we were .951 fielding percentage, that's pretty good. So if I had to put a tab on what made us successful, I think quality pitching and quality defense. If we got some timely hitting I think our record could have been a little bit better, but that's baseball. The guys showed a lot a courage and guts down at Brockport for the ECAC Tr. and played some great baseball."

Though the Golden Knights offensive standards from last season were not duplicated in 2001, Clarkson was met with much different pitchers, facing nearly every opponent's top two starters in each doubleheader. While the offense may not have enjoyed the same success as last season, several Knights stood out once again.

Junior third baseman Tim Barcomb (Cadyville, NY) led the team in several offensive categories and was among the league leaders in the UCAA as well, batting .393 with a six home runs, a Clarkson single-season record, and 37 runs batted in, the second-highest total in Clarkson history. Barcomb gained first-team ECAC and UCAA All-Star honors and was a third-team ABCA/Rawlings All-NYS selection in addition to being named a Verizon National Academic All-America.

Sophomore shortstop Matt Macaulay (Massena, NY), a second-team All-NYS All-Star and honorable mention UCAA Standout, nearly matched Barcomb offensively, hitting .387 with four home runs and 30 RBI. Macaulay also set a new Clarkson standard with 32 walks and added 15 stolen bases.

Fellow Massena natives, sophomore second baseman Nate Markell and first baseman Matt Draper completed the all-North Country infield with impressive seasons on the right side of the infield.

Also enjoying an outstanding season for the Knights was sophomore outfielder Brooks McMurry (West Palm Beach, FL). McMurry was named a first-team All-NYS and UCAA All-Star in addition to being awarded the MVP plaque at the ECAC Upstate New York Tournament. He also was named Honorable Mention All-ECAC. He batted a team-high .410 and was among the team and UCAA leaders in hitting and RBI the entire season after a hot start in Florida. McMurry set Clarkson single-season records for hits (50) and RBI (39).

Senior Jason Zeronda (Clifton Park, NY) and sophomore Matt Schwind (Hilton, NY) provided steady defense and offense in the middle of the lineup as well. Junior outfielder Brian Demshar (Carrabassett Valley, ME) also played a significant role for the Knights in limited action this spring and hopes to make his usual full contribution next season after recovering from a back injury.

Splitting time behind the plate were senior Shaun Bowman (Ogdensburg, NY) and junior Al Begeal (Deposit, NY). Both produced timely hits and much-improved defense for the Knights. The two catchers also handled the Knights pitching staff well in the few times of crisis.

Though the team batting average and run production was down from previous season, the Knights were able to compete at a high level with a much-improved pitching rotation. With several holdovers from the previous season, the Knights held opponents to single digits in all but four games in the entire season. In one stretch, the Knights held the opposition to four runs or fewer in 13 of 15 games.

Leading the Knights' pitching staff was senior left-hander Matt Nolan (Oswegatchie, NY). Nolan, a second-team All-American in his junior season, was asked to take on all of the Knights' toughest opponents and still wound up with a 2.93 ERA, ranking high among the UCAA leaders once again. Nolan, who was named a UCAA first-team All-Star, a third-team All-NYS standout and Honorable Mention All-ECAC, was also called upon in relief twice and produced two saves in clutch situations to go along with his 5-3 record.

An Honorable Mention UCAA All-Star, junior Chris Tarbox (Tupper Lake, NY) and senior Ben Brown (Wyomissing, PA) were also steady performers during the season and each accounted for a shutout victory in the Knights' drive towards the post-season. Brown pitched the nine-inning complete-game victory in Clarkson's ECAC Tournament Championship win over the University of Rochester.

Along with Tarbox and Brown, Rich Messano (Long Valley, NJ), Robert Stoddard (Silver Springs, NY), and Brad Kenny (West Falls, NY) also produced strong senior campaigns. Sophomore Adam Fielder (Niskayuna, NY) and freshman Josh Karon (South Royalton, VT) also proved to be valuable in relief during the season as well.

Also helping the Knights off the bench were senior Dustin Breen (Jericho, VT), junior Ian Manter (Acton, MA), sophomores Tim Bumpus (Liverpool, NY) Adam Batchellor (Batavia, NY), Aaron White (Watertown, NY), and Andrew Podlucky (Grand Island, NY), and freshmen Mike Carroll (Corcoran, NY) and Sean Merritt (Endwell, NY). Also looking for spots in the rotation next year are freshmen Cade Duvall (Mendon, VT), Keith Braunmueller (Syracuse, NY), and Matt Barden (Endicott, NY).
"I think the core players we have coming back are very, very good," says Kane. "I look forward to next season. We got a number of top recruits coming in. We will be young, but the future for Clarkson baseball looks pretty solid."

2001 GOLDEN KNIGHTS BASEBALL PREVIEW
While improvement was expected for the Clarkson University Baseball team last year, no one could have anticipated the jump to national prominence that the Golden Knights reached with their impressive 25-10 record in the 2000 season. Clarkson improved by 16 games from 9-26 in 1999 to 25-10 in 2000, the largest leap in Division III. Their winning percentage improvement of .457 was the largest in NCAA Division I, II, or III. Such an improvement isn’t expected this season, but the Knights’, under first-year head coach Jim Kane, are looking forward to a repeat performance of last spring’s success. Clarkson opens the 2001 season with a seven-game spring trip in Ft. Myers, Florida on March 12-17.

The Golden Knights ended the season with an ECAC Upstate Championship with wins over RIT and Oneonta State, gaining their first post-season baseball title in school history. Clarkson’s sights are set higher this season, as they look to gain the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) regular season championship and the NCAA Tournament bid that comes with that title.

Leading the way for the Golden Knights will be last year’s UCAA Player of the Year and Division III 2nd Team All-American Matt Nolan (Oswegatchie, NY). Nolan, a left-handed pitcher, went 10-1 on the season, losing only in a relief appearance, and led the UCAA in wins, ERA (1.24), strikeouts (79), and complete games (7). Opponents hit just .194 against him on the season and his ERA was fourth in the country last spring while his 10 wins were tied for 11th in the nation.

Joining Nolan on the hill as returnees are seniors Brad Kenny (West Falls, NY), Ben Brown (Wyomissing, PA), and Robert Stoddard (Silver Springs, NY) as well as juniors Chris Tarbox (Tupper Lake, NY) and Mark Anderson (Leland, MI) and sophomore Adam Fiedler (Niskayuna, NY). Last year’s staff allowed less than a hit per inning, an impressive feat in collegiate baseball.

While the Golden Knights’ pitching kept the team close in many games, the Clarkson batters also set standards that will be difficult to repeat. Clarkson averaged eight runs per game and hit a robust .343 as a team while slugging at a .515 clip.

Two starters from last year’s team will not return to this year’s squad. Leftfielder Willie Gould, who batted .398 last season with 43 runs scored and 33 runs batted in, was the team’s all-time leader in hits, runs and RBI. Also not returning is second baseman Kris Owen, who played an outstanding second base and was a valuable player hitting in the second spot in the order. While the Golden Knights will miss Gould and Owen, Clarkson returns several outstanding players from last season.

Returning in the outfield are senior Jason Zeronda (Clifton Park, NY), juniors Brian Demshar (Carrabasset Valley, ME) and Brooks McMurry (West Palm Beach, FL) and sophomore Matt Schwind (Hilton, NY). Demshar led the team with a .406 average while McMurry played most of the season at DH, batting .337. Both Schwind and Zeronda proved to be valuable pinch-hitters during the season, both batting well over .300.

Coming back to play the infield for the Knights are seniors Rich Messano (Long Valley, NJ) and Dustin Breen (Jericho, VT), juniors Tim Barcomb (Cadyville, NY) and Matt Draper (Massena, NY) and sophomores Aaron White (Watertown, NY), Nate Markell (Massena, NY) and Matt Macaulay (Massena, NY). Barcomb and Draper both batted over .370 last season while Markell solidified the infield defense and batted .368 from the ninth spot in the batting order. Macaulay, the UCAA co-Rookie of the Year and ECAC Upstate Tournament MVP, played centerfield last year and moves in to the infield to play at shortstop. Messano, Breen, and White should prove to be a valuable utility player for the Knights again this season.

Returning to the catching duties this season are senior Shaun Bowman (Ogdensburg, NY), juniors Al Beagel (Deposit, NY) and Ian Manter (Acton, MA) and sophomore Tim Bumpus (Liverpool, NY).

The foursome will be joined by freshman Sean Merritt (Endwell, NY). Newcomers to the pitching staff include freshmen Josh Karon (South Royalton, VT), Keith Braunmueller (Syracuse, NY), Matt Barden (Endicott, NY) and Cade Duvall (Mendon, VT). New Golden Knights’ position players include outfielder Mike Carroll (Corcoran, NY), shortstop Adam Batchellor (Batavia, NY), and third baseman Andrew Podlucky (Grand Island, NY)
